Welcome to Indian-Rhythms

Dance is the language that helps us to express our feelings and thoughts without saying a word. I love to teach body control and communication with body language.

Using Indian dance, such as Kathak, Bharatnatyam, Bhangra and Bollywood, we work on the physiology, emotions, expressions and understanding of culture.

One of the main focuses will continue to be able to create an environment and atmosphere that will be inclusive and allow for development. Young people will be encouraged to be creative and choreographers, take more responsibility for performances for music and the stage.

We work very closely with organizers of children’s festivals and programs, which gives our students a professional stage to be a star on. Indian Rhythms also organize performances and shows for students with national and international professional artists.

Indian Rhythms provides opportunities to take the exam and further education in Indian classical dance Kathak and Bharatnatyam, through an exam system from England which is approved by NOKUT.

For this, it cooperates with local tabla players so that the course participants can experience the traditional teaching situation as possible in Norway.

About the Founder, Richa Chandra

The sounds of dancing bells on Richa’s ankle gave an echo from the cold and high Norwegian mountains. Barefoot in the cold and snowy rain she was dancing a prayer for peace and prosperity for Norway’s first University of Peace.

Born in Norway to Indian parents, Richa has always believed that her roots and heart belong to both these nations. Growing up, she’s experienced a beautiful blend of cultures and chose to keep it as a part of her identity. Richa always had an affinity for communication, problem-solving and learning new skills; so while she grasped the meaning of ethical business practices from her father; it was her mother from whom she picked up the interpersonal skills. These inherent values have given her a wonderful way of connecting with others and helping them discover themselves while flourishing as individuals and enterprises alike.

From the age of five Richa has been standing on stage and been the ambassador for Indian culture in Norway. With her mother, Shikha Chandra, she spread the information and knowledge about integration and diversity trough Indian dance. Chandra family is known for cultural work and awareness by opening Norway’s first Indian dance and music school. Holding Masters in Kathak,  and with the studies in Pedagogic she has a unique way of tailor the sessions to each individual.

Dance school, performances and projects was the conversation at the dinner table each day. The whole family was involved because of the shared vision of a better community and different physical activities that can optimize health while being fun.

This initiative took work and effort but was totally worth when Indian culture was recognized, picked up and acknowledged through even those parts of Norway that are remote and seldom visited by others.

That being said, Richa has inspired many through dance, meditations and her spirit of entrepreneurship. Through her organisation Indian Rhythms, she has created platforms for others to grow and shine while setting trends and examples along the way.

Richa has brought colours, music and movements that were unknown to Northern parts of Norway long before the internet made the world a small place.

As per Richa, Indian Rhythms is not just about dance, it’s about being yourself, expressing the emotions through art and accepting others with the same fluidity and openness.

Indian dance and cultural center was formed by Shikha Chandra in 1986.

Shikha saw the need for youth who grew up in Norway in the 1980s and 1990s for a common arena where they meet other young people with the same challenges and the same interest in culture and integration.

In 2001, the company was transformed into a non- profit organization that has offered recreational activities in all years.

30 years later, it was time to start another branch of Indian dance and cultural center, a continuation to meet the needs of the market.

Therefore, with the blessing of my mother and father, the support of my husband, brother and sister-in-law, and my close friends, I started Indian Rhythms.
